Local authorities have an important role in promoting physical activity and healthy life styles. In the context of smaller communities in more interior / isolated areas, this challenge becomes a bigger one as other aspects bring complexity in their intervention: the existence or not of equipments and infra structures; economical purchase power of inhabitants; local transports and mobility within the territory. Not all small communities have a complete set of grassroots sports infrastructures, equipments and experts (pools, stadiums, football, gymnasiums, etc.) and the population does not have the same economical power to access/purchase these services. Also, in these where population is sometimes disperse along a wide geographic area / small villages and local transports are not always facilitating people gathering for grassroots sport or other collective/community activities. This is why this project aims at exploring the role of local authorities in promoting grassroots sports both as activity promoter/organizer and as mediator of local resources and actors. The main objectives are to raise the numbers of inhabitants practicing any kind of grassroots sports and to establish local cooperation and networks among the diverse associations and companies connected to sport. Being aware of the already existing offers and roles, the idea is to tackle 3 correlated areas of activity that will, on one hand, promote contact/proximity with sports and opportunities for its discovery/practice, and on the other, bring awareness, skills and information for policy making and intervention planning:

1. European reflection and debate on local authorities role for promoting sports;
2. Reinforcement of skills of local actors related to sports and health;
3. Discovery and experimentation of sports, bringing it closer to daily and social life. Regarding the activities and publics targeted, the idea is to focus on creating a pleasant and attractive environment for discovering grassroots sports connecting them with other fundamental aspects of personal and social life:
1. Promote sports and physical activity in family or in group: parents and children up to 13, grandparents and grandchildren up to 13, friends and friends with 14 or more;
2. Promote sports that are “easy” as they are adequate to all ages and physical condition and that are cost free, cheap or feasible with shred/landed equipment;
3. Raise social recognition and value for those who are practicing sport and healthy life styles. The sequence of activities here presented is chronologically ordered and interrelated, meaning that after the first activities are set in motion, the following ones will be adjusted to incorporate its results and learnings:

1. “DO-U-SPORT?” EUROPEAN DEBATES ON LOCAL AUTHORITIES ROLE FOR SPORTS AND HEALTHY LIFE STYLES Together with each of the 5 project meetings in the 5 partner countries, international public events (1 day of duration) will be made to debate specific aspects and issues around the local authorities’ role. Note that the last debate will be associated to the international conference / multiplier event to present the project results and outputs. Some of the issues will be:
a. how to built local networks for sports/grassroots with private and public actors of each territory;
b. what common action is possible between distance population / local authorities of different countries;
c. how to take advantage of sports to exploit aspect like ecology, environment, local economy, social cohesion;
d. are persons dedicated to any grassroots sports more orientated to healthy life styles, sustainable consumption choices, social values like team and fair-play;
e. how can grassroots sport be as instrument of democracy and participation.

2. “DO-U-SPORT?” WORKSHOPS FOR LOCAL ACTORS connected to sport (staff and leader from organizations, company, schools and local authorities) to raise awareness and facilitate their role towards sports practitioners regarding motivation and information. Some of the aspects will be:
a. Values promoted by sports;
b. Positive impacts of sports in health;
c. Added value for sense of community, sharing and self esteem;
d. Related aspects of healthy life styles: diet/food, consumption, sedentary life style;
e. Local networking and cooperation relevance for small territories.

3. “DO-U-SPORT?” information and awareness activities that will allow to motivate participants for the activities, to gather information to better plan them (as preferences for activities, timetable, etc will be better known):
a. Quiz on: (#) what would be your adequate/favourite sport, (#) benefits of sport, (#) personal history on sports;
b. Campaign Leaflets and posters, radio spots, newspaper articles facilitating the information content of the workshop, dully adapted to the “big audience”.

4. “DO-U-SPORT? JUST TRY IT” Series of activities here roughly planned but to be confirmed and detailed after the debates and information gatherer with the previous 3 activities. Participation on these activities will depend on group inscription as previously described – teams of parents and children, teams of grandparents and grandchildren, teams of friends – as concepts like collective, local and cooperation are also an objective of this project. These will be regular activities during a period of 12 months of the project, with a regularity of 1 month, so 12 activities, repeated or not to be promoted by local authorities with the local network with whom workshops were promoted. Only the planning will be made with the project resources, its implementation shall be made by each national partner with its resources and local partners.
1) Tracking/Hiking and nature – walks for discovering the wild life (plants, animals, natural resources)
2) Bicycle and food – picnic
3) Yoga and self awareness
4) Traditional games and fair play – peddy-paper, petanca, etc.
5) Dancing and interculturality / world awareness
6) Running / walking and natural and historical heritage
7) Fishing and global warming
8) Outdoor fitness equipment and obesity/heart problems
9) Orienteering
10) Table tennis
11) Kite (to be confirmed)
12) Board games in public spaces (garden, association, etc)

5. “DO-U-SPORT BADGES/PASSPORT” – activity badges will be given in each activity to the teams that participate and those who in the end will have more badges will participate in a contest where a team will be chose to participate the final conference / European debate.

6. “DO-U-SPORT STRATEGY AND RECOMMENDATIONS” to be presented in the final international event (multiplier event).
